Rustam Raza was born in 1782 in Tbilisi to Armenian parents. He was kidnapped at the age of thirteen and sold in Cairo, where the sheikh presented him to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798. Roustam Raza served the Emperor as a bodyguard until 1814. Later his memoirs were published in France, but the 1911 publication is considered the most reliable.

Until now only several fragments were known in Georgia, so the present complete publication is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Napoleon’s famous mamluk bodyguard.

The book is translated from French by Alexandre Mikaberidze and Nika Khoperia, who also wrote the introduction and comments for the publication.
