The author was an ethnographer and naturalist from Sankt-Peterburg who travelled to the south-west Caucasus in the 1870s. His impressions were published in his book which covers: the geography, social life and traditions of the local people, ethnic diversity and economic and trade connections of the region. In this respect, the book is an invaluable source of information about the 19th century Meskheti and is considered a bibliographical rarity.
