Anna Politkovskaya was one of the most outspoken Russian journalists, whose articles published in Novaya Gazeta were highly critical of the Second Chechen War and regularly focused on human rights, freedom of speech and social aspects in Putin’s Russia.
In her book she discloses corruption and brutality of the Russian army, dishonest or threatened judges, criminal economy and general lawlessness under Vladimir Putin’s leadership. Written in 2004, it was published in many countries, except Russia, and received numerous awards.
In 2006 Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated and though her supposed killers were trailed in 2014, it still remains unclear who the person or persons are behind the obviously commissioned murder.
